The historic market town of Tamworth sits on the River Tame from which it's name is
derived. Initially founded by the Saxons, by the 17th Century the town was one of the
most densely populated towns within the West Midlands. Still dominating the centre of
the town is the oldest and largest of all Norman Motte and Bailey castles in the country.
Built during the 11th century it been recognised in law as a 'Scheduled Ancient
Monument' which puts it within a group of buildings that are of national, archaeological,
architectural and historical interest and importance.
The town grew economically by having the control of 2 packhorse bridges over the
River Tame and the River Anker both on the busy London to Chester route and then
significantly again during the Industrial Revolution when the town became a major hub
of the canal and railway networks.
Today visitors to the town can visit the SnowDome the best snow centre within the UK. Covered in real snow all year round, it even has a snowmobile track. Another local family attraction is the hugely popular theme park, Drayton Manor at a distance of just 2 miles from Tamworth town centre.
